Using the Arts with Young People at Risk
23rd September 2010, 10 am- 4.15 pm, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead
This one day course explores what can be achieved when using the arts with vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. Starting with a detailed explanation of the benefits of youth arts this session will cover many of the practical issues involved in using the arts with young people at risk, including current CRB child protection legislation. Using a mixture of training techniques to help educate and inform, this course will take you all the way through project planning to project closure.

Behaviour Management and Youth Arts
11th November 2010, 10 am- 4.15 pm, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead
This one day course is essential training for anyone working within youth arts, but especially for those who are working directly with young people at risk. Undertaking practical workshops and activities with young people requires a broad understanding of youth culture and the issues surrounding young people’s lives. There are added pressures of working directly with young people who are already or may be at risk of social exclusion, one of which is having the skills, knowledge and experience to be able to manage their behaviour effectively and responsively. This course will discuss the practical aspects of behaviour management, look specifically at health and safety issues and risk assessment and will aim to promote a style of engaging with young people that encourages positive behaviour.
