Welcome to Issue 4 of the UK Trade
& Investment newsletter
There is little doubt
that 2009 was a difficult year for businesses but as we
prepare for a new financial year now is a good time to
look ahead to consider what the future has in store.
Few of us have not felt the impact of the
economic downturn and it certainly had a significant
impact on the North East economy. But while it did lead
to a fall in exports, the total annual value of goods
exported from the region still stands at more than £10
billion.
Our international trade performance is
something of which we can be proud and yet, for all our
achievements in the global marketplace, the actual
number of companies that export is still small.
North East companies have a lot to offer and UK
Trade & Investment is here to help every step of the
way – whether an experienced or novice exporter we want
to help them make the most of the opportunities
available in overseas markets.

Opportunity to join a group visit to
the UAE
In partnership with County Durham
Development Company (CDDC) and Durham County Cricket
Club (DCCC), UK Trade & Investment is offering you
the opportunity to join a group visit to the UAE in
March 2010. Led by experienced International Trade
Adviser Geoff Charlesworth the trip will include visits
to both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The long term
economic outlook for the UAE is positive. Designated one
of UKTI's High Growth Markets the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) is the largest market in the Middle East for the
UK offering huge opportunities for British companies to
develop their businesses in this vibrant economy.
David Coppock, UK Trade & Investment’s
International Trade Director, said: “The markets of the
Middle East offer huge opportunities for British
businesses. Their economies are booming and trade is
growing rapidly. There are opportunities in most
industry sectors including energy and environment,
defence, construction, financial, healthcare, transport,
education and skills and professional services".
An integral part of this visit is a formal
business reception that will be hosted by UKTI and local
commercial officers in the Dubai Embassy enabling you to
network and meet key heads of business from the region.
This visit also coincides with the inaugural
floodlit four day match between the County Champions,
Durham CCC, and the MCC, a match which acts as the
official opener of the 2010 UK cricket season. This
historic match will be highlighted by a formal reception
being held at the Abu Dhabi Embassy on 28th March in
conjunction with Durham CCC and hosted by the British
Ambassador to the UAE offering the unique opportunity
for networking and entertaining.

The Weightless Economy: How service
industries can trade internationally
Our international trade performance is
something of which we can be proud and yet, for all our
achievements in the global marketplace, the actual
number of companies that export is still small.
Many service sector companies in the region are
already competing successfully at an international level
and UKTI are throwing down the gauntlet to
challenge others to make 2010 the year to “Take it to
the world”.
Companies need to prepare themselves
so they are ready to take advantage of the opportunities
as we come out of the economic downturn and the time is
now right to take those all important first steps into a
new market.
International trade is a key element
of the region’s economic success and it’s been proven
time and again that companies that export are more
resilient. Our challenge is to ensure that businesses
know that help is at hand to those wanting to navigate
their way out of the recession by seeking out new
business opportunities overseas.
Next month will
see Service Network the only independent voice of the
service sector in the North East of England and UKTI
joining forces to host an event on how service
industries can trade internationally.
On the day
Simon Crosby, Lead International Trade Adviser, will
demonstrate the pitfalls and opportunities for
businesses looking to expand overseas and how adopting a
sustainable approach to your business can generate new
customers.

recognition for its innovation and Eco credentials and
