With rights management issues at the fore, whether publisher, label or band the one constant within the music industry that will never change...the lawyers are still in control! Former EMI <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/j> publishing boss Roger Faxon will take charge of the integrated group as CEO. The dramatic restructuring is evidently part of EMI s response to the ongoing problems facing the recorded music industry. Despite still boasting a roster including artists such as Coldplay and Kylie, EMI have been through some well documented tough times in recent years, announcing 1.75bn losses in February this year. Their investors, Terra Firma recently had to provide a 105 million cash injection into the company. In an official statement <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/t> issued this week, the company described its future strategy as aiming to become a comprehensive rights Management Company that can take full advantage of all global opportunities in all markets for music. This will maximise the experience and skills which exist within both EMI Recorded Music and EMI Music Publishing under one global head . EMI are part of the big four major music companies alongside Warner, Universal and Sony. Have your say: <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/i> Was this realignment inevitable and will the other major players consolidate their assets in a similar fashion? Will this mean a move away from signing music and bands, and instead, a prioritisation of TV format development along the lines of X Factor where more rights can be exploited? Are EMI saying that signing new music is a thing of the past and that they ll be concentrating on their extensive and popular back catalogue? And will this move ensure the long-term survival of EMI? Let us know what you think. In particular, the organisation have identified 38 links that are available via Google's search engine, and have requested that links be removed as soon as possible as they directly connect to sound recordings owned by its members. The BPI have highlighted links to tracks from artists such as Dizzee Rascal and Lady Gaga on popular file service sites such as Sendspace and Megaupload. Last October, Google removed links to high profile torrent site The Pirate Bay but were criticized when links reappeared a few days later. The statement by the BPI can be read here <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/d> . We ll keep you posted on all rolling developments. The US based publishers, including EMI and Universal are reportedly looking at requesting settlements of up to $15,000 (over 10,000) for each song illegally shared on the Limewire service. Limewire is a high profile website that enables the peer-to-peer file sharing of music and media files. Mark Gorman founded the site in the US during the year 2000, with free and subscription based enhanced versions available for download. A spokesperson for Limewire told website C-Net <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/o> that the company have imminent plans to transform their operations into a legitimate music streaming service. Earlier this month, the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) claimed that high profile file-sharing site Limewire had not done anything to operationally change its services since a landmark ruling last month. The station, which was launched in 2008, came to an end when DX Media terminated their agreement with NME <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/p> owners IPC media to produce the show for DAB radio and TV. NME <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/x> publishing director, Paul Cheal, said in a statement: "We have enjoyed a great working relationship with DX Media and we would like to thank them for all the excellent work that has gone into NME Radio . The station had an average weekly reach of 226,000 listeners in the first quarter of 2010 and had recently signed up former XFM presenter Alex Zane. In related news, it was announced that the NME TV station will become available on the subscription free Freesat service from July. Generate debate: <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/m> Clearly, this opens up a wider discussion about who will plug the gap should the much talked about 6Music closure go through. If the argument is that commercial radio will fill such a void, then exactly which services? Also- if the NME, with the strength of their brand identity and all of its diversification can t create a sustainable new alternative DAB station then is it possible? Will a migration to a TV channel be more successful for them? The A&R event has been organised by Plugged In Yorkshire <http://generator.cmail4.com/t/y/l/biruri/ullujluhy/q> and is free to members of the network. It's being held at Hull Universities, Enterprise Centre, on Tuesday 13 July from 6-8pm. With recent developments in the recording industry, bands are having to be more innovative in how they approach creating and selling their music and consider whether they need a record label behind them or not. Representatives from EMI, Atlantic and Leeds-based Dance to the Radio records will discuss challenges to how music has traditionally been sold and current business models. This event follows on from last month's event in Leeds where Franz Ferdinand's manager Cerne Canning gave his advice on artist management. Musicians and music businesses will be able to benefit from the experience of Matthew Rumbold (EMI), Chris McCourt (Atlantic) and Ali Tant (Dance to the Radio) as they give tips on how bands can attract the attention of labels. Between them they've signed or worked with artists including Paulo Nutini, Corinne Bailey Rae, Idlewild, Plan B and Pigeon Detectives, a special demo jury will give artists the chance to get their music heard by the influential panel members. Members of Plugged In Yorkshire will be able to benefit from the experience of Tom Campion (Universal Music), Craig Michie (Chrysalis), Simon Pursehouse (Sentric Music) and Roo Piggot (Voodoo Toddler) as they discuss opportunities and challenges facing the industry. The seminar will feature advice on how songwriters can make money from their music, from publishing rights to placing music in film and advertising. Launched on 17th June at the Royal Albert Hall, Moving Arts: managing the carbon impacts of our touring is a three volume report documenting the ecological effects of touring and suggesting practical ways in which carbon emissions could potentially be reduced. Alison Tickell, Director of Julie s Bicycle, which launched in 2007 said in a statement: By understanding the science and deploying our creativity in the manner in which we consider best we are much more likely to shape our future in a manner befitting our business." The report estimates that 85,000 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions were produced by live shows in 2009, including bands, orchestras and theatre. It goes on to outline a range of recommendations aimed at the live industry at all levels, including promoters, suppliers and venues and the organisation have also launched an online tool that will enable festivals, tours and venues to calculate their carbon impact effectively.
