Welcome to the February 2010 issue of Northern Film & Media's monthly e-newsletter, Feedback. Through Feedback, Northern Film & Media aims to share with you the latest news, events, and information on the moving image industry of the North East of England. Northern Film & Media had a spectacular Saturday attending the Outside-In Festival, where stars such as The Sugababes, Pixie Lott and N-Dubz performed. Working with Generator, the music development agency based in Newcastle, Outside-In also featured the cream of the North East’s emerging talent including: Let’s Buy Happiness, Polarsets, Trev Gibb, Viva City, Nadine Shah and Karoshi. Developed by Whizz Kid Entertainment, The Sage Gateshead and Channel 4, this winter festival of ice cool proportions was broadcast live by Metro Radio broadcasted and highlights will be featured on T4 this month. The Outside-In Festival was partnered on by Northern Film & Media and One North East and formed part of NewcastleGateshead’s world-class programme of festivals and events, developed by culture10. Northern Film & Media are pleased to announce the addition of Ewan McIntosh to the team. Ewan is one of Europe’s foremost experts in digital media for public service, particularly in education, and his role at Northern Film will see him developing the agency’s digital strategy and working closely with creative individuals in this sector. You can join Ewan in the first Newcastle Coffee morning on 10 February, where you will have the chance to talk through the projects you are working on, share some ideas and get some feedback. A drama made as part of Northern Film & Media’s Digital Shorts Scheme, has been nominated for a short film BAFTA. Jade, a film written and directed by Daniel Elliott and produced by Third Films, has already been selected for competition and awards in over 70 different International film festivals. The film won a Silver Berlin Bear at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival and Jury Prize at the 24th Odense International Film Festival. To read the full story click here. |

We are looking for energetic Film Makers who have a passion for making content that could make a difference to an issue, a cause or a community. The Apple iPad is here, with new iPad-only apps highlighted in the iTunes store. Northern Film & Media wants North East companies to be amongst the first in this new market. That's why we're putting up to £40k into your iPad application ideas, with applications accepted until February 24th. There should be an investment of money and/or accountable time from a private investor, too, which could be an equity firm or your own company's resources. The total sum required depends on what you’re trying to produce, but we can provide anything from £1k to about £10k per application, if the idea’s right. Click here to find our more. |
Northern Film & Media’s Production Service have launched a new Facebook page which will act as a forum for our region’s talent. The page will provide information about the industry to the talent and allow the talent to share any information they might have with their peers. There will be regular updates about new productions, crew call outs and possible opportunities in the industry, so it’s a real starting point for those wanting to break into the industry and a great source of knowledge for those already working in film and TV. The discussion section of the page also openly invites users to post any queries they might have, for both the Production Service and general users to help answer. The BBC have confirmed that the forthcoming fourth series of crime drama Inspector George Gently will be shot in the North East, bringing the show to its North East home. Thanks to a £150,000 injection from NFM’s North East Content Fund, independent film and television producer Company Pictures will shoot the next series of Inspector George Gently, which stars Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby and is set in historic Durham in the North East of England, instead of Ireland where it was previously shot. Revealing Stories is a high profile film project funded by the Northern Rock Foundation, that aims to leave a lasting legacy of creative good practice, using media to engage and empower the public. Northern Film & Media are searching for a talented visual storyteller to spend time exploring an issue or theme within a community and telling their story to the world. A creative storyteller will be commissioned to work on the project over six months and will be expected to deliver factual and experimental content across different platforms, amplifying the voices of the North East public and finding new ways to tell powerful stories. The Animex International Festival of Animation and Computer Games takes place every year at Teesside University, Middlesbrough and this year will run from 8 -12 February. The festival includes workshops from games and animation professionals, the Animex Student Animation awards, and Animex Business – a one day event for games and animation companies to gain an insight from some of the industry’s leading speakers. We are pleased to announce the first in a new Northern Film & Media events strand: the Hoult Sessions. Shepherded by our new digital maestro Ewan McIntosh, each session will see an expert in her or his part of the digital world visiting our Hoults Yard base in Newcastle to share their experience. The first Hoult Session will feature Mike Coulter, founder of digitalagency.com and takes place on 24 February. The workshop will give you a clear picture of how to engage in social media to build networks and promote your brand, so it’s a must for those wanting a greater knowledge of how new web based tools can extend the reach of your idea and brand. Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson have made use of a variety of North East locations for their new BBC comedy, Bellamy’s People – their first TV collaboration in 10 years. Bellamy’s People follows the experiences of radio host Gary Bellamy as he makes his first foray onto the small screen with a show that attempts to find out what makes the people of the UK tick. As well as familiar faces, viewers may recognise various landmarks from the North East. Location Manager Camilla Fox Lansley, based in the region, secured locations such as South Shields sea front, North Shields Fish Quay, Allendale, St Mary’s Island, Grey Street in Newcastle and Gateshead Millennium Bridge for the show. Three North East filmmakers have announced their success after receiving places at this year’s Berlinale Talent Campus. The Berlinale Talent Campus is held during the Berlin Film Festival and is a creative academy and networking platform for up-and-coming filmmakers from all over the world. During the six day event attendees engage in seminars, workshops, screenings and networking which aim to encourage collaborative filmmaking. Producer Jack Tarling from Shudder Films, writer and director Mark Chapman and writer, director and animator Sam Goldwater will all attend the campus which runs from 13- 18 February. Crossover is now inviting owners and senior managers of companies from the North West, North East and Yorkshire to apply for places on the pilot Business Lab, to be held in Leeds at the end of February. The Crossover Business Labs are designed for small to medium sized creative businesses based in the North of England. They are particularly suitable for companies operating in the audio-visual industries (operating in the film, tv, web, mobile, games and animation sectors) seriously interested in corporate growth by exploring new business models, extending beyond their current markets and developing new partnerships and collaborations. Mentors and speakers on the Business Lab will include expert facilitators from the Crossover team and leading professionals: people who have built successful creative enterprises, specialist lawyers and accountants, representatives of trade bodies.
