His breakthrough album  Freedom Fields took him from the folk club circuit to a whole new audience, and he has developed his sound since  firmly rooted in folk, but with a fuller, rockier sound. Live, the raw energy comes to the fore in a blur of fiddle, acoustic guitar and foot-stomping rhythms, topped off by Seth s emotive story-telling and distinctive vocals. The Saturday night concert in Tynemouth Priory with James Morrison, supported by Diane Birch, has long been sold out, but there s a free music programme in the Priory on Sunday with rising stars Kirsty Almeida and Beth Jeans Houghton, top Spanish hip hop act Violadores del Verso, New York-based reggae band Easy Star All-Stars, the Batucada Sound Machine from New Zealand, and headliners Lightning Seeds. There s the usual top notch international street entertainment programme on both days, a schools pageant produced by Worldbeaters kicking off Sunday morning (with an elephant!), and the stunning flags by artist Angus Watt (anyone watching the Glastonbury Festival on television will have seen Angus unmistakeable work decorating the site). Members of the band have performed at many festivals, including Mouth of the Tyne Festival and Vamos! in Newcastle, and as part of Elektro-Flamenco, who gave a storming performance at the Buddle Arts Centre in 2008. They run three regular age group sessions at Saville Exchange (8-10 years), Burnside Business & Enterprise College in Wallsend (11-13 years), and White Swan Centre in Killingworth (14-plus). Their most recent production was last year s  Wee Red , and they re now working on a brand new play,  Where You Left Me , to be premiered at two showcase performances at the end of the month, which will also serve as the official launch of Theatre Tantaraa.  Where You Left Me is a shadowy tale of a no-place which stretches as far as the eye can see, as dark as your doubts and as deep as your deepest sleep. Using movement, music and a specially-written script, the young performers will take you on a journey where a promise to stay by your side becomes nothing but a fairytale. In his first heyday he released six albums, and his biting, satirical and very funny verse delivered in a rapid-fire style drew huge crowds to his live performances. After fading from view for a while, he s back, as vital as ever, with new poems attracting a fresh audience as well as his stalwart fans. Acknowledged by Alex Turner as a huge influence on the Arctic Monkeys, John has been enjoying a big revival recently including appearances on BBC2 s Culture Show and a cameo (as himself) in the acclaimed Ian Curtis biopic  Control . The work, which is being installed in early July, uses the form of the ladder to create multiple structures inside the space which play with and reference the architecture of The Bridge, the station and the railway tracks.
