2. Charity Commission warning about fraudulent direct debit payments

The Charity Commission has been made aware of a number of instances where fraudulent direct debits have been set up from charity bank accounts. To help prevent this they have issued the following guidelines:

Advice from BACS:

Organisations setting up direct debits must verify the identity of the Payer before collecting any money. For organisations providing goods and services BACS makes a list of stringent verification measures available in a secure area of its website.

Organisation collecting by direct debit must also confirm in writing the instruction given by the customer within 3 days of setting up the direct debit.

For more information on direct debits visit the BACS website.

For more information contact Michele Stewart on 01642 803613 email michele.stewart@mvdauk.org.uk

4. Café Politique: Is Formal Education Enough?

Does our education system set us up for what life throws at us? Tony Jeffs teaches community and youth work at Durham University. He argues that informal education is just as important as our schooling and that as a society we should consider taking more responsibility for the future of our young people. Jeffs believes that instead of harbouring negative attitudes towards young people, if we took a lead from our European counterparts, including raising the school starting age and improving youth provision for young people, we would reap enormous benefits for society as a whole.

The event takes place on Monday 1sy February  7.00 - 9.00pm at The Urban Café, Dance City, Newcastle, seating is limited so early arrival is advised. For more information email l.sweeney@ippr.org

7. The Youth of Today

The Youth of Today recruitment is now open for 2010; if your organisation has any young people aged 13-19 who have shown leadership potential Changemakers would love you to nominate them for this prestigious opportunity.

The Youth of Today fellowship is a government programme to identify and support community leaders.  The young people involved will get support to set up or continue running a community-based project around something they feel passionately about, as well as networking and socialising opportunities with other young people across the country.

They are looking for 30 young people from the Tyne and Wear area and 30 young people from the Tees Valley area to take part in the fellowship. However, if you know someone who might be a good candidate who falls outside these boundaries, they would still like to know and will see what they can do!

The application form can also be accessed from the Youth of Today website and the deadline for applications is Friday 26th February. For more information, please contact Jonathan Simpson on 0191 226 7330 or email jonathan@changemakers.org.uk
