There are many different ways you can be involved in making the skills festival fantastic: Exhibit or Demonstrate Last year s festival attracted over 2000 members of the public, with several craftspeople reporting job opportunities being generated as a direct result of their participation. The Heritage Skills Festival is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of traditional heritage skills and the formal and informal training opportunities within the conservation and traditional skills sector, as well as to sell hand crafted items and promote the North East s rich built, craft, engineering and cultural heritage. Stands are free for those offering hands on activities to the public or charity/not-for-profit organisations, or 75 (for all 3 days) for businesses or craftspeople selling their work without offering hands on activities to the public. For more information and a booking form please contact kathryn.banfield@nect.org.uk or 0191 232 9279 Bring a school, college, university or other education group The Heritage Skills Festival is the perfect opportunity to bring local history and heritage alive with hands on activities in a range of heritage skills from green woodworking to weaving to traditional building methods and everything in between. With curriculum links to key stage 1-4 local studies, PHSE, history, science and engineering and key skills, numerous links into built environment and conservation courses at further and higher education level, as well as opportunities to find out about careers in the conservation and traditional building skills sector, this could be the perfect event for you to bring your pupils or students to. Friday is our dedicated education groups day from 10am until 4pm, although groups are welcome throughout the weekend. The festival is free to attend and accessible by public transport. For more information please contact kathryn.banfield@nect.org.uk or 0191 232 9279 Spread the word! We ll be keeping you updated with press releases, flyers and other publicity materials as we produce them. Please pass them on to any relevant audiences you know of. The more people we tell about this event, the greater number of people who will come and get involved with heritage skills, maybe for the first time. Stonemasonry needs you! WorldSkills 2013 Please see the below from Kevin Calpin posted on the facebook page Get Stonemasonry back in WorldSkills http://www.facebook.com/groups/188198346897/. It is really important that we keep this traditional skill in mainstream competitions like these. You can contact Kevin through the facebook group. The next WorldSkills Competition is being hosted in Leipzig 2013. As you all may know, Stonemasonry was a Home Nation Skill in London but only attracted 7 competitors. Chris Berridge, the UK competitor, was exceptional in the competition and quite rightly won a Gold Medal. To ensure the Stonemasonry competition runs as an official skill, there must be 12 competitors registered by July 2012. That gives me 6 months to find the countries required. I hope we already have a nucleus of countries who will compete in Leipzig and therefore need to target 6 or 7 more countries just in case there is a drop out. Sean did a brilliant job with this group for London and now I ask all who are as passionate as I am about stonemasonry to help get stonemasonry back in WS once more in Leipzig. I would be grateful for anyone who has industry links with European countries especially, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain, South Tyrol Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Estonia, and any Scandinavian countries to contact them and for them to lobby their WorldSkills representative to register a competitor. If you have contact names and email addresses you can also email them to me and I will assist them. I will be contacting influential organisations in the UK to hopefully support this campaign. WorldSkills http://www.worldskills.org/index.php. If you need more information please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. Kevin Calpin - WorldSkills Chief Expert Stonemasonry Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance Knowledge Gap Research The Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance (STBA) is carrying out a survey of existing research in the field of the performance of UK traditional buildings (where traditional is defined as pre-1919, solid wall buildings constructed of permeable materials). The idea behind this project is to conduct a relatively comprehensive review of what research is currently available to inform understanding of the performance of traditional buildings. This knowledge will then be used in two ways; to increase awareness of the research that is currently available amongst building professionals and others, but also to identify the 'gaps' in the field in order to focus future research endeavours, particularly with regard to schemes designed to improve the energy performance of this class of buildings. Dr Caroline Rye who is carrying out the research would be grateful for references to the sources of this work or even, if you have them, copies of relevant texts (along with source information). This may be work on thermal and/or hygrothermal performance, moisture behaviour, air infiltration, fabric performance and degradation, indoor air quality, energy profiling, human health and behaviour issues, amongst many other subjects.
