| Hello
& Happy (belated) New Year for 2010! Welcome to our oh-so-occasional newsletter keeping you all up-to-date with all the recent activity here at Bridge + Tunnel. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! With great pleasure we would like to announce we have a new patron at Bridge + Tunnel Voices (our media education charity) … Hardeep Singh Kohli. As you all may already know Hardeep is a comedian, writer, and presenter with work spanning over commercial and BBC programming. We are looking forward to him bringing a humorous overtone to the work we undertake. It is with great pride we add his support to the Bridge + Tunnel fold. In other news … ALI IN WONDERLAND Having successfully completed principle shooting last summer in both the North East and Iran the feature film, Ali in Wonderland, has passed the first assembly stages of post-production. In the latter part of March we will be undertaking some re-shoots and additional material. We would like again to take this opportunity to thank every volunteer and member of the production team thus far who have made this film possible. This has been a very challenging task indeed! Also joining the Bridge + Tunnel team is Madonna Baptiste (Tina Goes Shopping , Sink The Island, The Battle For Grosvenor Square, The Gathering Of Tribes, Boys And Girls, Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley, The Death of Klinghoffer), a very experienced producer who brings her experience of making documentaries with Penny Woolcocks and years as Head of Production at Blast! Films to the mix. Madonna will be undertaking the role of bringing the film to completion. We are currently raising the completion finance to finish the film and already have the backing of some very nice industry folk! And there is moved on Feature Two..... but that seems a long, long way away... For further information for Ali in Wonderland please visit the links below: www.ali-in-wonderland.com (official site) www.ali-in-wonderland.com/phase3 (trailer) www.bridgeandtunnelproductions.com/gallery (exclusive behind the scenes photos) TOMMY HAIR: A Lost Northern Treasure We are sad to hear of the passing of sound recordist and long time collaborator, Tommy Hair, who was a big supporter and friend of all of us at Bridge + Tunnel. His charm, generous nature and true community spirit will be a huge loss to us and the Region. We send our condolences to the family and hope the film, Ali in Wonderland, his last feature film, will be a fitting tribute to his talent. Opportunities ... V-MATCH VOLUNTEER SCHEME For those potential filmmakers aged 19 – 25 from a migrant and asylum/refugee background we encourage you to inquire on how you can be involved in the project. There shall be key volunteer opportunities on offer to further develop aspirations in filmmaking and build upon existing experience in the coming months. For more details please contact our Project Manager, Paul Dingwall: paul@bridgeandtunnelproductions.com FUTURE PROJECTS Photo- X In collaboration with V-Inspired we are embarking on a new darkroom black and white photography workshop based project in the coming months tying directly into the interactive features of the ali-in-wonderland.com. Bridge + Tunnel shall be furthering it’s development in interactive video and teaching black and white stills photography to young volunteers. If you have any old, unwanted darkroom photographic equipment (trays, chemicals, enlargers, paper, SLR’s etc), please donate them to our project. We know there is tons of unused stuff in attics which can inspire young people to experience the magic of photography! Please contact paul@bridgeandtunnelproductions.com for further details. The Real Get Carter We’ll just tempt you with that title... We are looking at the endangered oral histories of the regions bad men and women. RECENT SCREENINGS Wiki : Hope’s Rwanda to Newcastle and Asha:Hope along with two other Bridge + Tunnel films were shown at ‘Waiting to Leave or to Live’ as part of International Human Rights Day. The screening took place at an outdoor event at Newcastle Civic Centre and the feedback and discussion provoked was an endearing response to the content of these films. The Wiki:Hope project has been entered into the Tyne and Wear Archives along with ‘The King of South Shields’ and ‘The Last of the Dictionary Men’ for future generations to learn the personal stories of migration in the North East. Last of the Dictionary Men completes it 3 city tour of Yemen. It has been an absolute success! We are now hoping to find a London venue for its return journey to the UK and a final resting place. ‘Neville in a Blue Dress’ has also been selected for the Cinéglobe Festival 2010 in Switzerland. It’s a film that can always find an eternal audience. UPCOMING EVENTS Tina Gharavi will be speaking at Oxford University on the 5th of March. She will be talking to students from the Anthropology of Migration course and others at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology in a lecture series along the theme ‘Rights and Recognition’. Tina will also be speaking at Culture Shock with a talk entitled: 'Strategies of Power: Narrative, Storytelling & Migrant Histories'.
